Our Basics: Get to Know Us
Sangyan means Cognition. Simply put, The Sangyan is an endeavour to take cognisance and pursue data-driven and evidence-based research, advocacy, campaign, and impact activities, in order to trigger, catalyse, and nudge sustainable change, especially on the subjects and perspectives requiring better attention and documentation from legal, political, environmental, social-economic, cultural, and civilizational perspectives and vantage points. The core principle of The Sangyan is Dharma [The Right Thing To Do - A person’s moral and social obligations both as an individual and also as a member of society], Nyaya [outcome-oriented justice], and Niti [concept of rule-based law]. The motto [ध्येयवाक्य] of The Sangyan is Acharya Chanakya's (Kauṭilya / Viṣṇugupta) niti vakya: 'कालाति क्रमात् काल एव फलम् पिबति।' (‘When the right action is not taken at the right time, then time itself defeats the purpose of the action.’)
Some of the initiatives under The Sangyan are Project Drishtikon [research articles, blogs, factsheets, etc.], Ulgulan Talks! [postcards, interviews and case studies], #KnowYourConcepts [Lexicon Series], Vatavaran Vaad [endeavour for dialogue, debate and discussion around the Environment, Climate Change, Weather, Pollution, Biodiversity Loss, and other related issues, to trigger, catalyze, and nudge sustainable change towards environmental justice and nyāya, by way of taking cognizance and disseminating information and creating awareness] #BoloTohJaane Initiative [Audi Alteram Partem - #HaveYourSay Series to break the Spiral of Silence], Project Drishtant [Best Practices], and much more.
Our Logo — Emblem of The Sangyan | द संज्ञान
The concept behind The Sangyan's Logo is understanding 'all things being the same, the simplest solution is the best one' and is inspired by 'The Thirsty Crow Story', the logo symbolises this sutra that we mean to realise and reflect in our endeavours.
The logo integrates the core principle of The Sangyan - Dharma [The Right Thing To Do - A person’s moral and social obligations both as an individual and also as a member of society], Nyaya [outcome-oriented justice], and Niti [concept of rule-based law] and the motto [ध्येयवाक्य] of The Sangyan - "कालाति क्रमात् काल एव फलम पिबति" [when the right thing is not done at the right time, then the time itself destroys the purpose of that action].
The logo has been conceptualised and designed by The Sangyan's founder and curator, Adv. Abhishek Kumar.

Alt Text (Visual/Image Description) — (The Sangyan's Emblem and Logo): The black-and-white graphic features the circular logo of “The Sangyan.” Within two circular rings lies the text: "The Sangyan" (Sangyan meaning "cognisance") at the centre-top and its three fundamental principles - "Dharma (धर्म) • Nyaya (न्याय) • Niti (नीति)" (Duties and Righteous Actions | Justice and Equity | Principles and Policies) at the centre-bottom. In the centre of the logo is the graphic depicting 'The Crow and the Pitcher' Fable from the Panchatantra (an ancient Indian collection of interconnected animal fables, written around 200 BC by Pandit Vishnu Sharma, that teaches moral and worldly wisdom through stories), symbolising yukti (resourcefulness), buddhi (practical intelligence), and the maxim/sutra that the simplest effective solution is the best. The Crow also represents the aitihasik/historical figure of 'Sage Kakabhushundi', denoting the Eternal Witness with the Sākṣī-bhāva (Witnessing Consciousness), Vehicle of Knowledge and Storytelling, and the Symbol of Awareness and Consciousness. On the right and left are two Dharma Chakra ("Wheel of Cosmic Law and Order") signifying and symbolising 'Ṛta' (cosmic rhythm and order), 'Kālachakra' — the cyclical nature of time (yugas and kalpas) and 'Karma Chakra' (Interplay of action and their natural consequences and results). At the bottom of the logo is The Sangyan's motto of ।। कालाति क्रमात् काल एव फलम पिबति ।। (Acharya Chanakya's dictum meaning - "when the right action is not taken at the right time, then time itself defeats the purpose of the action").
